Te Kooti's Lookout, veiled in mist-ory
To Get There: Turn off SH2 (Napier/Wairoa Road) on to
Willow Flat Road. Travel 13km to the bridge over the Mohaka river,
then a further 11km to the junction where you turn left on to
Mokonui Road. Travel about 8km along Mokonui road to the suggested
parking area. After some 6km from the Mohaka Bridge unsealed roads
give quite easy access by 2WD. Due to logging in the area, drive
with your headlights on as soon as
you turn off the State Highway. The road is prone to slips and
washouts following heavy rain.
Note: 2 other caches are on the way to the bridge, the first
is a drive by the second is a puzzle which will take around an
hour.
The Hike: At the parking area there is an uphill driveway
to the sheep station and a down hill track to Honeymoon Hut. Take
the downhill track but don't worry, you'll be walking uphill again
quite soon. The track meanders for some 2km until you get to
Honeymoon Hut, just keep to the obvious main route.

The Hut: The hut was built by a young Scandinavian on his
OE in the 1990's. It is equipped with all mod cons (see photos in
the gallery) and comfortably sleeps 4. It is ideal to use as a base
to explore the surrounding area. Go grab yourself a trout for
supper.
