Geocache Description:

A cache on the "wrong" side of the river.

The blue dotted line shows the river run before 1789.

When you find this cache your are standing on what was once the old western riverbank. Almost due south you can see the buildings that are still standing on the Volden farm. Before the Big Flood ("Storofsen") in 1789 this farm was on the western side of the river. The big flood made the river take a new and more direct path down the valley and into lake Mjøsa.

The Big Flood ("Storofsen") took place 20th to 24th of July 1789. The lake Mjøsa rose to 7 meters above normal level. 72 people were killed and 1523 farms damaged.

The reasons for the Big Flood was the following. The autumt of 1788 was were cold with no snow. The ground freese therefore went wery deep . Then in the winter there was an enormous downfall of snow. In the spring - before the snow had melted - there came sudden heat heat and very heavy rain. SInce the the ground freeze was so deep, the ground did not absorb much water and the water flooded down from the mountains and into the rivers. On the west coast the rainfall have been calculated based on the time it took to fill a barrel of a certain size, The result shows 320 mm of rain in 72 hours.

The cache is a military one-man food-container. It contains the all the usual stuff plus some goodies and a FTF-pin for you know who.

This cache was originally a part of the X-mjøs series and published 19.12.2010.
