In 1845 and 1846 a portion of western Wisconsin
was surveyed into townships and sections, and the
area was then included in the Mineral Point Land
District. In 1848 this land was put on sale for not
less than the minimum price of $1.25 per acre.
Mr. Thomas G. Rowe registered the original plat
for the City of Onalaska at the State's Land Office
at Mineral Point, Wisconsin on August 13, 1851.
The legal description of this plat was "in part on
the South East quarter of Section 5 and the North
East 1/4 of Section No. 8 Township 16. N. of Range
7 West of the 4th P. M. La Crosse County, Wiscon-
sin." The plat was surveyed by William Hood.
Two weeks later an adjoining lot to the east,
consisting of forty acres, was platted by Chas. T.
Jansen. On November 27, 1851, the plat of the
village of Onalaska was acknowledged by Mr.
Rowe and Mr. John G. Laird, and was recorded. In
June of the next year, Mr. Rowe bought Mr.
Jansen's forty acres and other lands. James C. Van
Rennselar and Robert C. Volkert were his attorneys
