Prestonfield War Memorial sits proudly at the top of Prestonfield Avenue, within its very attractive garden.
Following the end of World War II, the residents of Prestonfield and the surrounding area arranged a meeting and discussed how they could remember the war dead from the area. It was agreed that a memorial would be the best idea and that residents would contribute 6 old pence weekly. These collections took place from 1946 until 1949, when the order was placed and work began on the memorial, being completed in 1950.
A memorial service is held here each Remembrance Sunday, attended by young and old from the area, including those who knew some of the people who fell.
The actual war memorial sits in the middle and is surrounded by rose beds and a heather border. The two flower beds include large feature cordylines. The garden was improved greatly with the help of a millennium grant in 2000 when it was adopted by Prestonfield Primary School.
The Community Christmas tree, an Austrian Pine (Pinus Nigra) was planted in 2007, and the lights are switched on with a carol service in early December. In 2010 part of the heather border was removed and small box hedging was planted with the words "Prestonfield War Memorial", backed with stone chips.
Today it cared for by both the Primary School and Prestonfield Gardening Group. Local schoolchildren are involved in planting up the spring and summer bedding in the flower beds.
To avoid disturbing the memorial too much, cache is a black nano behind the GREEN sign.
