Geocache Description:

NorthWest end of Kao San

Between the Temple and serenity, Khao San Road and a party and the police who smile and try their best to keep it all with in reason it is another great example of unique Thailand. The Temple, Wat Chana Songkram,

The full name of the temple is Wat Chanasongkhram Rajaworamahaviharn. It is probably the only temple many Western people will see, since it is located just opposite of the famous Khao San Road in Bangkok. This is probably also the reason why there is a sign at the entrance, which reminds travelers to be dressed appropriately and not to enter the temple with shorts. Inside the Ubosot is a famous Buddha image called "Phra Buddha Norasee Trilokachet Mahetthisak Puchaniyachayantakhodom Boromsasada Anaworayan", but I don't think you will ever have to refer to that name. It is associated with Bangkok since it's foundation. The name of the temple means "Victory in War" (Songkram) and is easily confused by non Thai speakers with "Songkran" the watersplashing festival in April.

Built in the 18th century, the temple has recently been renovated. If approaching the temple from the riverside area, you first pass though the shady courtyard (and parking lot) of the temple housing (kuti), where both the monks and lay workers for the temple live. The courtyard also usually has a few stalls for the tourists.
From the kuti, you pass under a bell tower to reach the temple compound. The ubosot lies in a simple courtyard. If coming from the river, you are at the back of the ubosot. The gable ends of the ubosot are beautifully decorated in carved gilded wood and mirrored tiles.

Inside the ubosot, the altar is quite impressive with its gilded Buddha image in front of a large gilded fan, and ceremonial umbrella above. Of special note are the elephant tusks, one pair of which is ebony. Also of note in a side aisle is a small enthroned statue of King Taksin.

Tucked away in the center of the backpacker are of Banglampu is the temple of Wat Chana Songkram. People often use the temple as a shortcut between Khao San Road and the river without ever stopping to take a closer look. Big mistake.
