Geocache Description:

Welcome to the fifth my my Nice N Easy series of geocaches in the Sunny town of Tsawwassen!

This cache will bring you to another really popular location in Tsawwassen and a place where some history was made not that long time ago and somewhere you might remember hearing about on the news. Homeowners had protested and had fought long and hard against a very controversial power line proposal. This was a debate that had been going on for years because of various evidence that stated that these power lines could cause cancer if you were exposed to them for a long period of time. As a result of this medical evidence the people were demanding that the province bury the lines underground as a compromise.

To give you an idea the 230,000-volt lines that are now currently in place were double the power of the old ones that used to be there. It was these old power lines in which the residents had been told for years by BC Hydro would be coming down a few years ago and not replaced in either placing them underground or building new more powerful power lines as their replacement.

After the decision had been made that the old lines would be coming down and new more powerful ones would be built BC Hydro Crown Corporation purchased 105 homes in the area this year as part of a voluntary buyout program offered to residents who didn't want to live with the high-voltage overhead power lines running through their yards.

That summer, July 2008, 2,500 citizens of all ages came together for a rally at South Delta Secondary - today overshadowed by the power poles that traverse the school grounds where children study and play. It was probably the biggest gathering of its kind in the community's history as these were not the kind of folks that are generally known to start any political protest. There, the crowd heard from, among others, Dr. Jason Ford, Childhood Leukemia Specialist at Children's Hospital. Holding up a pile of research papers from the world's top medical journals and universities with each having a different opinions on the subject.

Dr. Ford said:

"There's a lot of research into what causes childhood leukemia - and since this whole power line issue has come up in Tsawwassen, I've had a lot of questions from people here: 'Are my children going to be at risk?' And I have to tell you I don't know. And the sad fact is really nobody knows. This is an area of great controversy and intense research in the medical field... And the safe thing, when you don't know, is to bury the lines."

Earlier this year, BC Hydro extended an offer to the unhappy homeowners, giving them the opportunity to sell their homes in the addition to the 105 who allowed BC Hydro to buy their homes at only market value. Most of those homes have now been bought.

This location might be really tricky to reachso YOU MUST be very careful for muggles as this is a public place. That being said just be careful that you are not being watched and please make sure you place the cache back into its spot and that the lid is safely and firmly on.

Congratulations to Rumrunner1 for getting the FTF!!

Otherwise Happy Caching!
