Geocache Description:

Small Altoids tin, bring pen

It is my belief that Geocaching will aide historians in the future. Some Geocaches document local lore, urban legends, or forgotten history.

Look across the Mare Island Straits. If the white ship is still there, that is the TS Golden Bear II. It was the training ship for the California Maritime Academy for quite some time. It was also the USS Crescent City. It had a distinguished career before becoming the Maritime Academies Training ship. Please read about its exploits here:
(visit link)

I first went onboard that ship when I was twelve and my older brother was on a training cruise. I later attended CMA and spent three wonderful training cruises on that ship to such places as: Sydney, Cebu, Fiji, Maui, Vancouver, Japan, Panama, and many more. I learned so much on that ship…about life, about work, and about the world. I didn’t learn the whole history about the ship until much later. On a side note, I painted my name underneath a deck plate in shaft alley; I’d love to check on it. It’s my own secret log entry.

I have a hard time fathoming the history that happened aboard that ship before me. About the men who sailed on it to battle, who fought and died for our country. I had it easy. Take a second and look at it while you still can.
