The position of the Catholic church with regards to geocaching remains unclear in the 21st century.

Great Popes like St Eutychian, St Leo I and Pope John Paul II allowed their flock some latitude in the area of seeking hidden treasure, yet said very little regarding the concept of signing logs and re-hiding their new-found wealth. On the other hand, The Church has long stressed the notion of "from dust (or bushes, guard rails, etc.) you were taken, and to dust (or bushes, guard rails, etc.) you shall return" through the encyclicals of several Popes, including St Leo II, St Caius (also called Gaius) and Innocent VI.

In the end, it can be stated that the (unofficial) position of the Catholic Church with regards to geocaching can be summed up in the reading of Proverbs 14:29:

"The patient man shows much good sense, but the quick-tempered man displays folly at its height."

... which is to say, be patient when you go caching ... and don't get angry when they're set too high.
