Geocache Description:

A good friend of mine gave me some historic Joplin postcards as a gift. I found them so fascinating that I wanted to make a series of postcard caches to show the way Joplin used to be.

This is a regular size cache placed about 50' south of Castle Rock that used to be a popular area at the turn of the century.

Castle Rock on the banks of Turkey Creek is a a large rock formation that was well-known to early residents of Jasper County, from the Native Americans to the first white settlers. In fact, long before the town of Joplin existed, pioneer children attended Franklin School near Castle Rock in the 1840s. As Joplin expanded throughout the 1890s, its residents enjoyed the serenity of Castle Rock. After the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway ran a line from Carthage to Galena, Castle Rock became an attraction at Midway Park, a stop at the midpoint.

Throughout the centuries, countless daredevils have jumped from the cliff into the creek below. Midway Park, which included the Castle Rock site, comprised 10 acres of beautiful woodland on Turkey Creek at the northeast edge of the Joplin city limits. From 1890 to 1895, Midway Park attracted large crowds to its beer garden and picnic grounds. Area bands performed concerts in the summer. Residents continued to enjoy Midway Park, where Mother Nature provided the attractions-lush grass and shade trees, cool water, a place for "lounging and outing " in the summer.

The site now is mostly hidden by trees and a neighborhood was built on the north side of the Turkey Creek making the area unavailable for picnics and swimming... and the daredevil jumping off the rock. Please be careful when looking for the cache as you'll climb up some steep paths. Walk to the edge of Castle Rock and imagine the park and those who used to enjoy this natural rock formation.

Parking can be found at N 37° 06.001 W 094° 29.663 or just west of here across the road to a small parking area.
