Geocache Description:

This easy one can be a cache and dash or incorporated into a lovely walk along the banks of the river Tweed following the Southern Upland Way between Melrose and Gattonside. Please cover and camouflage the cash carefully to avoid muggles seeing it!

The container is a small plastic box containing a log, pencil and a few swapables. There is parking for a couple of cars close to the cache as you enter Gattonside, alternatively you can park at the Chain Bridge or in Melrose itself. Follow the well defined path which is popular with dog walkers and fishermen but be aware that the path is close to the river so keep a close eye on young children. The path can be muddy and narrow in places.

Gattonside came into existence as a garden and orchard for the Monks living in Melrose Abbey when King David gifted the lands to them in 1143. It is now a popular village with several good restaurants - the Hoebridge Inn and Chapters Bistro.

The large country house you see behind the cache is called St. Aidens. It was built in 1826 by John and Thomas Smith and was called Gattonside House. It now operates as a base for adults with learning difficulties. The Gattonside Chain Bridge was built in the same year and is protected as a category B listed building.
