A Sistema container 3-4m inside a drive (horizontal tunnel) into the once famous Try Fluke mine system.
Easy to find but parking and getting to location requires great care as on a narrow, steep, winding, busy country road. To locate drive down hill (Whitianga to Kuotuna) 70m past Cache and park on side of road by 33KV power pylon on outside of left hand corner. There is another park slightly up the hill. Walk back up hill - careful of traffic. Past wooden armco and then cross from next armco when opposite GZ to a safe area. GPS coordinates 2m from mine entrance. You will need to scramble. A torch will help. GPS taken with i-phone 3 with Geocaching AP
Try Fluke was a significant gold mine close to Kuotunu late in 19th C. Comprises a series of shafts and drives (horizontal tunnel meeting a vertical shaft) down the hill side. Can explore this drive - runs 50m ending at filled in shaft. Need a torch - will get wet feet. There is a flat strip of ground where railway used to run from drive entrance to the ridge above the car parking area. Now overgrown.
There is more mining sites in area but hard work to get to.
If driving up from Kuotunu drive past the GPS ref and turn around when can find safe place 1-2 km up hill and approach facing down hill.
