About Parque Nacional Camino de Cruces:
The Camino de Cruces National Park is 15 kilometers from Panama
City and is easily accessible. There is an administrative office
and information booth. The park covers 4,590 hectares and runs
parallel to the Panama Canal and is a series of soft undulating
hills. It has an administrative office with an information
booth.
The park was established in 1992 and is set between the
Soberania National Park, to the north, and the Metropolitan Natural
Park to the south, allowing the continuous movement of animals
between the various protected areas.
There is a great variety of flora and fauna, beautiful
waterfalls and some endangered species The area is also
historically significant. The Spanish used the route to transport
gold and treasures brought from Peru, Baja California and Chile
from the Pacific Coast to the Chagres river that flows into the
Caribbean. There is a restored section of the road in the Park. It
has a characteristic type of paving.
In the rainforest you will see large specimen of silk cotton
tree, cuipo (Cavanillesia platanfolia), nance, jobo, oak (whose
spectacular blossoming in April and May heralds the end of the dry
season).
There are an abundant variety of birds, highlighting the
presence of the crested eagle, cucilillo faisan, the red-and-green
macaw (Ara chloroptera), and the spaty-tailed trogon.
Among mammals, at tree level in the rainforest you will find the
titi monkey (Saguinus geoffroyil) and the evasive jujaná, plus
other interesting animals like the gatos solos (Nasua narica) and
the ñeque (Dasyprocta punctata). the armadillo, the green iguana,
the roe deer and the three-toed sloth.
