Geocache Description:

The Tatár Pass is 10 kms away from Körösmezö on road H09 and is crossed by a road and a railway line. Transcarpathia is an oblast of Ukraine and borders on Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Lviv Oblast and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The oblast is pretty much different from all other oblasts in Ukraine, due to its history and population. It is mainly inhabited by Rusyns but other ethnic groups are numerous, among these are the Hungarians (12.1%) and the Russians (2.5%).

The thousand years old Hungarian border was meandering on the ridge. The lands of Transcarpathia for a long time were part of the Kingdom of Hungary, up until the 4th of June 1920 and parts of it again between the 2nd of November 1938 and the 29th of June 1945.

The Tatár-hágó (Tatár Pass) is located at 931 metres (3054 feet) above sea level in the Northeast Carpathians and is an important crossing point. It was named probably after the Tatars who mostly attacked Hungary through the pass. The Hungarians also used it when they arrived to the Carpathian Basin, along with the Vereckei Pass and Uzsoki Pass. The value of the pass lies in its strategic position. It was a battlefield in the WWI between the Austro-Hungarian, German and the Soviet forces. It was a battlefield in the WWII as well. There were many Hungarian, Polish, German and Russian soldiers buried in the nearby graveyards.

From the parking lot head towards the old road where you'll see the two concrete boulders remained of the barrier of the thousand years old Hungarian border: N 48° 18,286' E 24° 26,633', and the Hungarian sentry box. There other milestones mark the Czechoslovak - Polish, Hungarian - Polish and Hungarian - Soviet border and the present oblast border between Transcarpathia Oblast and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast: N 48° 18,224' E 24° 26,705'.
