Invercargill's first settler was Irishman John Kelly, a seaman who was living on Ruapuke Island. In March 1856, he moored his boat in the Otepuni Creek, put up the settlement's first building for his wife and children, and ferried settlers up the estuary and into the hinterland.
For a while, the new settlement was named 'Inverkelly' after him. ('Inver' is a Gaelic word meaning 'a river's mouth').
It was only later that the growing town was named in honour of Captain William Cargill, the Superintendent of Otago province, who helped establish Southland as a place for settlement.
Please take care with your children as this is near the Waihopai River, however you do not need to go near the water's edge.
Container only has room for log, so please bring your own writing implement. Please return the container securely.
