You can read the story and view photographs of Brookland Wood and how it was and has developed here on the Fontmell Magna website.
As you arrive at the entrance to the wood, you will see a plaque on the gate which reads:
This site was part-funded
by a legacy from
Miss Doris Clapton
and is dedicated to the
Bournemouth and Poole Rambling Club
Doris was a much loved member of our family. After working as a civil servant in Whitehall during WWII, Doris eventually retired to Bournemouth in 1969 where she became a passionate member of the Bournemouth and Poole Rambling Club. She died in 1996, aged 84. Sadly, this was long before Geocaching had been heard of, but we feel certain that she would have thoroughly approved of it as a past-time.
As Doris’s bequest to the Woodland Trust was used to assist in the purchase of Brookland Wood, we thought that setting a cache here would be an excellent way of keeping her memory alive.
Cache is now a camouflaged watertight container, about the size of pack of cards. When placed the cache contained a FTF prize of a £2 beer token plus a few other swaps. Sam Stig TB also started his journey from here.
Parking is available at the nearby village hall when not otherwise in use. There is an unfenced pond near GZ so young children should not be allowed to wander off. However, there is a children's adventure playground by the village hall if they need entertaining.
As most of the family don't live particularly close to the wood, we would be very pleased to have any photos added to your log to show the emerging flora and record how the wood develops over the years. Good luck and enjoy Brookland Wood.
With thanks to The Woodland Trust for allowing Rambling Doris to be placed here.
