Geocache Description:

Sorry its been out of commission for awhile. In a new spot now, where there are lots of muggles, especially from above. Please use stealth. This is a working prison.

Most of these buildings and walls were made from rocks that came from the hill in back. Prisioners cut them from the side of the mountain, shaped them, hauled them, stacked them to build the entire complex, starting in 1861 and finishing in 1873. Still in use today with more than 900 men.
The first witnessed escape was in 1872 . Five prisoners were at work digging postholes for the wall with an invalid guard watching over them. They called him to come inspect the depth. Leaving the gun behind he stooped over to look down. They grabbed him by the heels and stuffed him head first into the excavation. He was submerged the full length of his body and they were off, with his gun. Took 2 other guards to pull him out. The witness said that he was riding a good horse and carrying a good gun, but, since none called on me for assistance, I remained neutral.
On 4/2/1919 a Mrs Rose arrived to began her sentence for Grand Larceny. On 6/27/1919 she did not appear for role call. A bench, surmounted by a ladder, which had been used in the chicken house as a roost for chickens, was found leaning against the 23' wall. They figured she'd caught a train and was long gone since the previous afternoon. She flew the coop, so to speak.
