Geocache Description:

Yarroweyah, (meaning - strong wind), is a rural town in northern Victoria. Its located 251km north of Melbourne, 10km west of Cobram, and on the railway line between Strathmerton and Cobram.

History

1842 – Elizabeth Hume, (widowed sister-in-law of explorer, Hamilton Hume), took up a pastoral run named Yarroweyah run extending from Cobram to Yarrawonga.

1870’s – Pastoral settlements started, mainly for wheatlands.

1881 – A school was opened in the Wesleyan Church before the schoolhouse was built in 1884 at Yarroweyah South and a third was opened in 1891 at Yarroweyah North, (Koonoomoo), closed in 1953 when Cobram Consolidated School (know Cobram Primary School) opened. The school house became a scout hall, (still standing today).

1882 – Opening of the Post Office, later named Yarroweyah North, (know Koonoomoo), and it closed in1976.

After World War II an extensive soldier settlement area was established to the south of Yarroweyah. The north-south roads were named after theatres of war, and the east-west roads after generals, (Tobruk, Labuan, Macarthur).
1947 – Land acquired for soldier settlements, (area of 4,450 ha). Eighteen farms became 108 irrigated farms, and population grew from 60 to 360 people.

Yarroweyah Hotel stood close to GZ. Little information is known about it, and only one photo exists, (a copy of this hangs on the bar wall of the Top Pub in Cobram). George Francis John Nancarrow, (occupation: Farmer/Hotel keeper), with his brother ran the Hotel in the 1880’s, until George passed on in 1888.

The town has The Soldier’s Memorial Hall, which was built to commemorate the soldier settlers, and is still used regularly.

2005 – The town’s water supply was connected.

The Cache: Small sistema container with pencil, log, swaps, has room for geocoins and small travel bugs. As GZ can be muggle busy sometimes, a revisit maybe needed.
