Ancient Places Series - Tumbledown Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

NannaTrains: Unfortunately both of the Ancients Seekers have now passed away. They were my parents and although the caches have passed to me I am unable to maintain them on a regular basis living some 40 miles away (so at least an 80 mile round trip) and working full time too. Mum and Dad loved caching and I would really like to keep al their caches going but that is not possible. Thanks for everyone who did their caches.

Geocache Description:

Small round tub about 13mm tall.

This cache is one of a series. There are five at the moment. We hope to add more in the future. All are going to be placed in Ancient or Historic locations (hence the name) around Herefordshire. There are many historical sites around the county which we have found interesting and would like to share some of these with fellow Geocachers

Aconbury Wood surrounds the Iron Age hill fort, named Aconbury Hill Fort or Caer Rhian, but many locals refer to the site as The Roman Fort. It is believed that the fort was occupied from the second century BC for about 400 hundred years and pottery has been found on the site to suggest this. There are many paths leading up to what remains of the enclosure that was the main fort and there is a path leading West to North following the old ditch . Partly hidden by trees on the summit is a triangulation point and from the North bank of the enclosure there are splendid views of the Herefordshire plain including the city itself .

Congratulations to Organised Chaos for First to Find

The cache can be accessed from either the parking at Little Birch Village Hall N51 59 288 W002 43 265.
Or from the alternative parking at N51 59 357 W002 43 630

As it is on the external track of the woods it is possibly accessible for a wheelchair user, but could be a bumpy ride though. There are no gates or stiles to negotiate to reach the cache although help could be required to reach the cache because it is about 3ft off the track. The track can also be very muddy at times.
