Located along the Old River Road.
For quite a few years now, my route of choice from my Hilton Head office to Augusta and points northwest is along the Old River Road. The closest paved roads to the Savannah River are US 321 from Hardeeville to Estill, SC 3 to Revolutionary Trail, then SC 125 from Martin through the “Bomb Plant.” (Chert Quarry Road is paved and runs closer to the river than Revolutionary Trail, but there are no churches and it makes for a longer journey.)
Traffic is always light, the scenery is pleasant and you’re out of mobile phone coverage for much of the route. Once you leave Estill, there are over a dozen churches along the route and not a single convenience store. Representing several Protestant denominations, the churches range from historic to modest and all are worth seeing. All but two are currently active. You can get the information you need by visiting the churches in any order, but if you want to do the cache in a single trip, you’ll backtrack the least if you start at the Concord Church marker just north of Hwy 301.
Coordinates bring you close to each church where you can get the information you need to determine the final location.
