Cache is located just outside of the Grote Family
Cemetery. Take the time to look over the fence into the
cemetery and you’ll see why they put a lock on the gate.
Container and original contents supplied by Fantastic 6.
Please note that this cache should only be attempted during
daylight hours, and that it is NOT in The Grote Family Cemetery.
Please don't go into the Grote Family Cemetery, but be sure to look
over the fence.
The following is from a plaque at the entrance to the
cemetery:
Grote Family Cemetery
Founded in 1901
Henry (Heinrich) Grote, born in Braunschweig, Germany, on
October 18, 1841, immigrated to the United States at the age of two
with his parents, Heinrich & Johanna Grote, and his older
siblings. The Grotes traveled to America with the hope of finding a
better life for themselves and their family. They settled in Comal
County, Texas in the Spring of 1846. Henry grew to be a strong
young man and became an American citizen. He proudly served his
adopted homeland, fighting for the preservation of the Union as a
supply wagon master in the First Texas Calvary in the U.S. Civil
War, and was taken a prisoner of war in 1864. After the war, in
1869 he and his beloved wife, Matilda, settled on this land in
Bexar County “on the waters of the Cibilo Creek about 14
miles northeast of San Antonio” to farm and raise a family of
thirteen (13) children.
The Grote Family Cemetery was consecrated in 1901 upon the death
of Henry & Matilda’s first grandchild, Benjamin, son of
Ferdinand & Lina.
Henry & Matilda embodied the spirit of America’s
pioneers; enduring through difficult times, working hard, raising
their family, prospering, and living out their days here on this,
their beloved farm, until their deaths in 1920 and 1934
respectively.
We, their descendants, honor their sacrifices and celebrate
their diligence, resilience and courage in forging a life together
in the great state of Texas. With love and admiration, we pay
tribute to their memory.
