Geocache Description:

This is another cache designed to highlight the Old Mills Trail, across the river from the popular Riverside Trail. Albemarle County owns and administers Old Mills Trail, and is slowly extending the trail south. The trail’s northern sections have a crushed limestone bed, and it becomes a dirt trail to the south. The county hopes to eventually extend the Old Mills Trail all the way to Milton Road, thanks in part to a land donation by State Farm Insurance.

Parts of this trail have been nicely improved through the use of bridges and a boardwalk. In other areas, erosion along the river bank means that the trail winds perilously close to the edge of the river, ten feet below. This part of the trail is separated from the river by an old towpath. Several small footbridges near this cache were constructed during 2010’s annual United Way Day of Caring by volunteers from the University of Virginia.

If accessing this site from the Old Mills Trail heading south (the recommended route), there is a slight jog in the trail that is not marked or obvious. At the kiosk built by the Rivanna Conservation Society, head uphill on the dirt road for about 50 feet before continuing on the trail. Following the original route takes you to some nice rocks, but no further.

This cache is an ammo box. Please re-hide the container for others to find after you are done.

Congrats to Kivitos for another aggressive FTF. Kivitos suggests that I post parking coords for this cache, but I believe folks should find this as part of a series of caches along the Old Mills Trail, and parking coords are posted for the more northerly caches. Parking closer than the Pantops Shopping Center could risk towing and is at the cacher's own risk.
