Geocache Description:

Another great spot in the Wonderful Clemson Forest. This is a patch of virgin forest with towering oaks, beech, poplar along a fine small bubbling creek.

The Clemson Experimental Forest is one of my favorite places on earth. This cache takes you to a patch of virgin forest that is a rare gem of towering oaks, beech, poplar along a fine small bubbling creek in the George Aull Natural Area.

The vision of George Aull resulted in the Clemson Forest. This patch of beauty is named after this great man. The Clemson Forest is over 30,000 acres purchased for $13 per acre in the 1930's. George pushed to have the Federal Government purchase what was mostly a wasteland destroyed by poor cotton and corn farming.

This patch of woods was most likely surrounded by vast wasteland of poor soil from the farming. Too steep to farm it was probably left intact as a virgin forest. Recent storms have knocked down some of these gently giants so travel is a bit rough and maybe a bit sad but this is the cycle of life. The remaining giants are there for your visit.

Drive to Wild Hog Road (187) off 76. Turn at the first dirt road on right (lines up with Boscobell road on left) after Dalton Road (circle drive for the Milliken Plant). Park at the gate. You will see a sign for "George Aull Natural Area". Walk down the forest road until you see another sign for George Aull Natural Area on right. The trail leads from here (old trail sign may still be there). That winds to the "loop trail". Take a left on loop trail and walk to creek. You will have to go up the creek for a short piece to find this one. As you travel the loop trail admire all the gentle giants both on the ground and in the air. As usually the spoiler will lead directly to this one. Leaves will definitely make getting sats tough but this is an easy find.

Please bring pen, lots of goodies to start and scooby TB.
