Question
?
Question
superficielle. Elle devient dure et plus compacte. Comment se nomme
ce niveau jaunâtre ?
Question

The quarries of Cléty
At the time of the formation of the chalk, the climate was warm.
The glaciers were very reduced, the sea level was higher. A vast
sea recovered all Europe. It settled so much chalk as the
geologists called her: "the sea of chalk ".
This sea was to be warm so that seaweeds proliferate and leave
layers of sediments. The deposits were very slow (1 in 3 mm by
century) and were needed several hundreds of thousand years to
deposit the visible layers of chalk on the site.
The chalk has a structure in horizontal layers. It is underlined
here by the benches of flint.
Flints are very hard, grey stones with the heart black and
crystalline as of the glass. The geologists think that they arise
from sponges. Their skeleton, constituted by silica, dissolved
little by little in their death. When the content in dissolved
silica in the water was too important, the molecules of silica
gathered together and filled the sea bed: the silica precipitated.
The siliceous frost so trained slid in the dens of animals living
at the bottom of the water. The flint kept the shape.
