Visit
the historic Gabriel's Gully.
This cache is another in the series of caches in which drawp has
traced some of the pathways of his heritiage. A paternal great
grandfather was an early gold miner at Gabriel's Gully after
arriving in NZ from Eastern Europe.
The discovery of gold
at Gabriel's Gully by Gabriel
Read in May 1861 led to the Central
Otago gold rush. While gold had been found in the Otago
before, this rush was beyond expectation, with the population of
the gold field rising from almost nothing to around 11,500 within a
year, twice that of Dunedin
at the time. It also stimulated overseas interest in the new
colony.
The cache is a 200ml sistema container with log book and
pencil.
