This area was once the site of the original town cetntre of
Barrow.
St George's Square was Barrow's original Town Centre before the
town expanded and the Town Hall was built. The site of St. George's
square was originally known as Rabbit Hill and is shown on early
maps.
St Georges Church was built between 1859 - 1860 and was consecrated
in 1861, it is thought to be the oldest purpose-built Anglican
church in Barrow.
The closed Railwayman's Club used to be the central Railway Station
of Barrow built in 1863. Bricked up double arches can be seen if
you view either end of the building, these were the access points
for the trains. The main entrance was located in the centre of the
building where the ticket office would be located. To the rear of
the building a number of bricked up arches and the back of the
platform can be seen. The building was renamed Cambridge Hall in
1882 and was replaced by the central station located on Abbey
Rd.
The large limestone building is the Bank of Lancaster. The bank
later became the wages office for the local railway and railway
works. My uncle worked as a clerk at this building for the railway
at around the 1950's.
If you think that this cache looks a lot like The Roose Rd
cache........ That's because it is. The Roose Rd cache has been
replace with an identical container minus the magnet (which didn't
work on the aluminium box).
