Papyrus - IHINE #6 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

About the IHINE caches
This cache is part of the IHINE series (Industrial History In Nedre Eiker). Nedre Eiker has a long tradition as an industrial municipality, and did in the 1950s have the highest percentage of industrial workers in the country. The IHINE caches will take you on a guidet tour through the remains of the most noteworthy of these old industry sites. NB: Each of the IHINE caches has a digit written on the lid of the box! These digits sum up to the position of a coming bonus cache, so make sure you record these numbers for later!

About Papyrus Paper Mill:
Papyrus Co Ltd. was inaugurated in November 1905 with a share capital of NOK 130.000. The factory made so-called non-smoothed tissue paper, and started up with a 90-inch paper mill capable of producing about 700 metric tonnes a year. At this time, electricity was arriving in Nedre Eiker, and Papyrus got their first power line as early as in 1907. Even so, much of the production remained steam-powered, since the excess heat came in handy both for heating purposes in the factory and in the paper drying process.

Papyrus Co. Ltd. went bankrupt already in 1908 after only 3 years of business. For the next two years no paper was produced, but in 1910 the production started up again with new owners, and Oscar Bjørnstad was hired as manager for the new company Papyrus Paper Mill. In 1920, Bjørnstad bought all the shares and continued to run Papyrus Paper Mill as his own private company. Papyrus made it reasonably well through the depression years, and was also rebuilt and expanded several times. One such expansion was the addition of a department for producing crepe household paper. Such paper was somewhat of a speciality with the Buskerud paper mills, and was in high demand.

Despite that large parts of the factory was destroyed in a fire in 1940, the company managed to get back in business and performed well during the post-war period and far into the 1950s. The main reason for this was the export of most of the production to the British market, where the demand for Papyrus' household paper was high. But in the 1960s, this market was more or less lost to other businesses, and even desperate attempts to find other solutions were not enough to keep Papyrus Paper Mill from filing for bankruptcy in 1970.

To get to the cache you have to cross the railway (the cache is obviously not placed on or near the railway, and searching here is both dangerous and completely unnecessary). Both the "Sørlandsbanen" (going to Kristiansand) and "Bergensbanen" (going to Bergen) railway lines pass through here before splitting up at Hokksund. On November 7th 1943, the resistance group "Osvald-gruppen" sabotaged the tracks about 400-500 meters east of the cache, causing the "Sørlandsekspressen" (Southern Express) to derail. The train carried German troops, and two carriages fell into the river killing several soldiers. The retribution came swiftly; many were arrested and 5 people were executed.

Today, the buildings are owned and used by the construction company Strøm Gundersen, and the cache is placed with their consent. Although the cache is available at all times, it is recommended to visit it after business hours since not all employees are informed of its location. Good hunting!
