"Oneonta" or Place of Peace is a 12 acre bush block in Lake Tyers Beach in East Gippsland formerly owned by John and Dilys Ramsdell.
John Ramsdell has been referred to as a 'pioneer conservationist'. Moving to Nowa Nowa in East Gippsland in the 1950's he spent the next three decades building up a large and successful sawmilling business during which time he developed a strong interest in collecting and polishing gemstones and rocks, eventually transferring this passion to sanding and polishing large pieces of tree roots, culminating in an unique and immensely impressive 7m x 4m example of the art now housed at Mingling Waters in Nowa Nowa.
He and his wife Dilys moved to Lake Tyers Beach and puerchased Oneonta. He built a dam, reticulated a large part of the block and planted hundreds of Australian native trees and bushes. Different native orchids can be seen at various times of the year and there are a number of wombat burrows, a particularly large one situated under the big shed on the property.
There are also a significant number of aboriginal scar trees.
The Ramsdells had a vision to protect their unique environment for future generations and to create a facility to allow people to come and learn about the biodiversity of Far East Gippsland.
After John's death Dilys donated the property to the Tambo Shire, now the Shire of East Gippsland.
