Geocache Description:

Millom Castle is a ruined castle privately owned and not open to the public. Holy Trinity Church is locally known as the Old Church.

William le Meschin, Lord of Egremont granted Millom to Godard de Boyvill in the early 12th century AD. At this time stone castle building was confined to royal and baronial sites, so Godard would have built himself a fortified residence. Round about 1300 AD raids from Scottish forces often came this south and permission to crenellate the castle was given in 1335 to the by then owners the Huddlestone’s.
The great tower was built between the 14th and 17th century’s and a license to crenellate this was given in 1622. During the English Civil War the castle came under fire from the Parliamentary forces from on the hill side and caused severe damage.

The Holy Trinity Church is a late Norman church built next to the Castle, it is well known for a famous window called Fish Window (as it is the shape of a fish’s bladder). Within the churchyard are several listed monuments, including the beautiful old sundial standing a few yards from the South wall of the church. It probably has some connection with the sandstone altar tomb to Sir John Huddleston, and shows four shields, two of which bear the Huddleston arms.
The stone which lies near to the North door of the church may be the base of an ancient market cross, erected no doubt when Henry II, in 1251, gave a charter to Sir John Huddleston to hold a market in Millom every Wednesday. In the Huddleston chapel are two tombs. The alabaster monument, 1494, commemorates Richard Huddleston, and on it are his effigy, and that of his wife Lady Mabel Dacre.

The cache a small lockable box with a note book and pencil. Because the castle was Royalist during the English Civil War, can you keep any swaps to the theme of Royalty.
