Mikulyntsi Fortress
Mikulyntsi is one of the oldest known towns in the Ternopil Region first mentioned by Rus Prince Volodymyr Monomakh in his “Povchannya” (“Homily”) written in 1096. It later would belong to the Kingdom of Galicia, the last kingdom of the Rus.
The town was important because it guarded the ancient Vlachs Road, which was the major route used by the Tatars to invade Poland. Polish King Zygmunt III granted the town Magdeburg rights and turned it into a town-fortress in 1595. The fortress was constantly under attack by the Tatars, but it was the Turks that finally burnt it down in 1772.
Lying in ruins, the deed on the fortress soon ran out and Lyudvika Potocka of Mniszech, the owner of the town of Mikulyntsi, requested that a new deed be written up in her name. Polish King August III satisfied this request in 1758. The fortress was then converted into a cloth factory.
