John Dillinger Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

10%: I have gotten many complaints of my caches being too small for the area they are hidden in and also for the rating I have given them. Seems everyone has their own feelings towards what my caches should be. Therefore, to eliminate all the flack I get over my caches, I have decided to pull them all from the game.

I have spent the time and effort to research these gangsters in hopes that someone might learn of them from time past. I felt that this was an era that had its share of bad guys.

But I can no longer put up with the criticisms I always get of how I should do this or that with my cache hides so they are being pulled.

Thanks to all those who enjoyed doing this series.

Geocache Description:

John Dillinger, the son of a farmer, was born in Indianapolis on 28th June, 1902. The family moved to Mooresville where he developed a reputation as a rebellious youth. He joined the United States Navy in 1923 but deserted after only a few months. He returned to Mooresville where in September 1924 he robbed a local grocer of $555. He was arrested and convicted and sent to Michigan City State Prison.

Released in May, 1933, Dillinger was released on parole and with two other ex-convicts, John Hamilton and Harry Pierpont, they began robbing banks in Indiana and Ohio. Dillinger was arrested and jailed at Lima. In October, Hamilton and Pierpont broke into the Lima Prison and freed Dillinger. This escape caused a national sensation. Dillinger's obtained more publicity when his gang broke into two Indiana police stations to obtain fresh supplies of guns and bullet-proof vests.

On 23rd October the Dillinger gang robbed the Central National Bank of $75,000. The following month the gang got $27,000 from the American Bank in Racine. In early January 1934, they robbed another bank in East Chicago, Indiana, and during a gun-fight, killed a police officer.

Dillinger and his gang were arrested in Tucson, Arizona, and imprisoned in Chicago. However, while waiting to be tried for murder at Crown Point Prison, on 3rd March, 1934, Dillinger escaped from prison. With a new gang, including Baby Face Nelson, Dillinger robbed banks in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The Chicago police persuaded Anna Sage, a local prostitute, to befriend Dillinger and lead him into a trap. On 22nd July, 1934, Sage, known as the "Lady in Red", went to the Biograph Theatre. As Dillinger left the theatre, a team of police officers were waiting for him. One of them called out "John" and as he turned round the officers opened fire and Dillinger was killed in a hail of bullets.

Always beware of those ground critters that would like to bite you. This area is their home and not friendly in the summer time when they are out and about.

Since this area is hard to get around, it may be beneficial to use your tracking option in your gps to find your way back out. It will be a big area to walk or you can drive and walk (if you have clearance) but not only just drive to all these caches in the series. And using Google Earth will not be 100% beneficial either. The photos are very old and are not what they show. Things have grown considerably since the photos were taken. What looks like roads are now over grown. It will be a challenge to get around and find these caches and not everyone will conquer this challenge.

Even though all the caches in this series are film containers, they should be easy to find since all are either in a pile of rocks, duh, plenty of those around, or some other identifiable item to help locate them. Please do not make it hard for the next cacher by hiding it better than you found. Since it is out in the expanse, I do not want these to be any harder to find then they already are and I want everyone to find them that ventures out. The trick, is however, to get where the caches are.
