Early Pioneers Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

Dedicated to the early settlers of the Mudgeeraba region who worked in the logging industry felling the giant trees of the area with axes and crosscut saws.

The 1840's saw the beginning of the timber industry in the local mountains and led to the Mudgeeraba area being opened for permanent settlement in the 1860's. Many sawmills were established at this time, and while it was common for timber to be floated downstream or transported by bullock teams, it was decided in 1924 by the owners of the Neranwood Mill to build what in many ways was a unique private tram line.

Two small locomotives "Kathleen" and "Alison" pulled carriages carrying sawn timber along this two foot gauge line running from Neranwood Mill, through the saddle between Mt Nimmel and Tallai Mountain, over a creek crossing near the present Berrigans Road, and through the cuttings in Railway Street to the Mudgeeraba rail siding. The timber was then transferred to the State rail line which ran along the same route as the Brisbane to Coolangatta motorway takes today.

The cache is a small 35mm film canister hidden inside a tree. Please recover well and bring your own pen.
