This cache is located at the end of the Emu bay track on Motutapu Island. It is a reasonably easy walk but is away from where most people venture and is quite a walk from the rangitoto ferry. It is also very accessable from Emu Bay itself by boat.
The cluster of buildings that the cache is located around date back to the mid to late 1800s.
The main homestead was built here in 1869 by the Reid brothers who owned the whole of Motutapu Island at the time and it remained in the family for many years after.
William and James Reid both lived in the main homestead here untill William was tragically killed in 1870. James continued to live here untill 1900 when his much younger wife (43 years) decided she liked Home Bay better. James built the homestead which still stands today at Home Bay.
The Emu Bay homestead was renovated in 1951 and was then demolished by NZ lands and survey in 1976 to the concrete foundations that remain today.
