Welcome to The Gateway to the Glades. This vast area is used to grow sugar cane, corn, and sod. They use the rich soil from what once part of the Everglades swamp forest and sawgrass plains ecosystem. You can see a variety of birds that include the roseatte spoonbill, night heron, the endangered snail kite, and occasionally a bald eagle. You will also see an abundance of herons, storks, and hawks. There are plenty of alligators sitting on the bank and some are huge! The grassy shoulders will sometimes be thick with rabbits munching away. We like to watch the torrents of birds flood the air catching insects escaping the flames of the burning sugar cane. When the ashes drop out of the air at home, it is like our Florida snow. You can enjoy watching the summer thunderstorms roll in from afar, seeing lightning and rainbows at the same time. We have always enjoyed coming out here, and thought that if we placed some caches, ya'll might enjoy it as well. This cache is the beginning of guardrail caches we will place out here called Railing Cane. BYOP. Enjoy and don't forget your fishin' pole!
