Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a small bamboo stand at the corner of Towsontown boulevard and Charles street. I think this cache could be very difficult but we'll just have to see. The most difficult part will be parking. I parked on the side of the road and was fine but PLEASE BE CAREFUL! You may want to bring a pair of tweezers or pliers. BYOP!

Bamboo is a very diverse and specious type of grass (Poaceae family) that can be found on every continent (except Antarctica). However, the bamboo you will find at this site is an ornamental bamboo not native to Maryland or the Americas. Bamboo is extremely fast growing and some species are very long lived which make them very attractive to landscapers and gardeners but these characteristics also make bamboo capable of becoming highly invasive and thus able to outcompete native flora. Non-native plants destroy complex communities and lower the biodiversity of not only plant species but also animal species that depend on native plants for food or for the completion of their life cycle.
Instead of using exotic species to beautify your homes or gardens use native shrubs and trees. If you're from Maryland try the flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Sweetspire (Itea virginica), or Piedmont Azalea (Rhododendron canescens). All are beautiful and frequented by native bird species.
