Geocache Description:

A very cool area of history in the Upper Keys. Lot's of muggles during business hours. Permission was given to come onto property during business hours only 11AM to 7PM.

The Florida Keys has one main route from Florida City but the "Old Timers" would take the Card Sound Road shortcut to avoid the traffic on the Overseas Highway. In the 1920's it was the chosen and only path for those wanting to get to and fro Key West.
As you drive toward Key Largo a mangrove lined creek followed along the road .Card Sound to the left and Barnes Sound to the right.
Just before getting to the bridge, a little community of about 100 people once lived here and they all had waterfront property. They waited 60 years or so until Andrew came by and took out most of the barge style homes. These folks were waiting for their squaters rights to kick in to claim their little piece of heaven in the upper Keys.
Businesses also took hold in the 1960's and opened boat rentals and restaurants around the original owner of Alabama Jack's that was around since the 1940's.
AJ's was one of the few that had legal title to the property and passed it along to the second owner the "Sullivans".
The Sullivan's past title to the third owner who lost the property after only 4 years. Her reign was from 1977 to 1981.
It was "Runners Country" back then and this owner ran "the goods" right through the doors and eventually was caught and lost the property.
Alabama Jacks held on to the reputation of the runners of the 1980's and made it a difficult sale.
It was around this same time that a Catholic school teacher named Phyliss moved to Florida and passed the Florida real estate exam. The very first assignment for Phyliss was to sell this run down restaurant. She certainly tried to sell it but ended up selling to herself, besides the 80's were not boom times for Florida real estate and she needed to make a living.
Phyliss had three young children to raise so she jumped right in.
She opened the doors once again but had a large hurdle to get over....and quick.
Dozens of outlaw bikers in every color made AJ's there home away from home. Phyliss remembers getting tough with these people as they strolled into her place with beer in their hands. She told them it was her alone with three kids to raise and they needed to buy the alcoholic beverages from her if they wanted to stay.
Phyliss took a big chance on AJ's sucess but an even larger chance on her own life.
She never looked back and made a go of it. She earned the respect of those bikers in time with the locals that traveled this route to get to their luxury homes in north Key Largo. So as the numbers of bikers dwindeled and the upper crust Keys residents became patrons the business flouished.
After 30 years, Phyliss and her son Mike have one the best kept secrets of the Florida Keys!
The Card Sound squatters are all gone and the only place that remains is Alabama Jack's.
