RAF Sopley, Call sign Starlight
The cache is placed on a footpath next to what used to be RAF
Sopley (call sign Starlight). During the second world war it was a
ground control intercept radar station. After the war it became the
home of Southern Radar and the Joint Air Traffic Control School. It
was closed as a radar training centre in 1974 and moth balled. In
the 1970's it was used briefly by the Household Cavalry during the
Queen's Silver Jubilee year and for several years the site acted as
a rehabilitation centre for the Vietnamese Boat People. It is now
privately owned by several different companies including Wessex
fire & rescue service who are a private company that provide
fire cover for events such as the Blandford steam fair.
