Geocache Description:

This geocache is near Warm Lake, just south of Stolle Meadows on NFD #474. Vulcan Hot Springs is a popular local attraction in the South Fork Salmon River Valley, on a 0.75-mile path that crosses over three sturdy foot bridges. Most of the year one can expect bleached rocks, russet algae and wildflowers to be seen on this scenic hike.

BRING A PICNIC! Our family has picnicked here while boiling hot dogs and eggs in Ziploc bags IN THE SPRINGS and carefully monitoring the dogs and kids. Easy to get scalded here if you’re curious and not cautious, so we’ve enabled the “dangerous area” attribute. If you stick to simply looking for the cache, you will not come in harm’s way.

Idaho has 232 hot springs, and is said to be the state with the highest hot spring density. There are 91 records in the Idaho Office of Energy Resources (IOER) geothermal database for Valley County. Fifty-four have temperatures greater than 85° F (29° C), but less than 212° F (100° C), and thus are classified as “low temperature geothermals.” Vulcan Hot Springs has the highest reported temperature for a spring in Valley County at 191° F (88° C).

The container is an ammo box populated with tradable goodies that are typical of our new caches to start. The swag is likely to include: collectible coins, a Hot Wheels car, a rubber superball, stickers, and a fresh pair of alkaline AA batteries.

The First-To-Find prize is a little different than our usual leave, two Sacagawea dollars in a deluxe viewing box. From its first year of being minted, 2000, until 2008, this coin had a bald eagle on the reverse. In 2009, the reverse of the coin began changing yearly, with each design in the series depicting a different Native American accomplishment. Our FTF coins feature the original design and the 2011 design commemorating the Wampanoag Treaty of 1621 in our former “backyard” of Massachusetts. Congrats to maui&mountainlife for finding the cache first amongst the sulfurous odor, WELL DONE!

This cache has a sister trackable, a 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar Travel Bug, TB40KXV. To learn more about the Shoshone Indian herself, please check out Wikipedia as she was very important in Idaho’s history: (visit link)
