Geocache Description:

Back in the early 1900’s, before the Dairy road bridge (Now Dairy Dock), and long before the Monaro Hwy bridge, the only way to cross the mighty Molonglo river to get to Fyshwick was by Ferry!

A cove was especially excavated at this point to allow for a smooth landing of the ferry on the bank - away from the fast flowing waters. The cove itself is easy to see if you have a look on Google Earth.

Sadly, once the bridges were built the ferry service was discontinued! However, to this day the ferry is still exactly where it last stopped! Additionally, one of its mighty anchors can be found nearby. The plan was to keep this anchor as a memento to the ferry, in some future museum, but they only managed to drag it a short distance, before they decided it was way too heavy, and just left it there! Well – it’s not in a museum, but at least it is available for all too see! Also nearby, can be found a patrol boat, and the remains of the steam shovel used to excavate the cove.

Nowadays, the only people that come here are occasional explorers, and Blackberry pickers! I met 3 whilst hiding the cache!

Questions to answer at the provided coordinates:
At published coordinates: Number of large ballast tanks that the ferry hull is made of = AB
At F2: Number of prongs on the anchor -1 = C
At F3: Number welded on the deck of the patrol boat +1 = D
At F4: Number of letters in the name of the Locomotive works that made the Steam Shovel x2 = E

Checksum A+B+C+D+E = 26

Cache can now be found at S35° 19.ACB E149° 10.DEA

There is no need to cross private land, or climb over any fences to get to this cache!
Disclaimer: Although I spent considerable time researching the above, I am not 100% sure of every last detail, for example, maybe the ferry was a barge, but that didn’t seem as interesting…
