Geocache Description:

Before I moved to SC a few years ago, I found this preserve while killing time on a weekend during a business trip.
There is plenty of parking at the start of this path, both free (along the road) and a pay lot. There is a sandy path leading directly to the beach from the parking area, in addition to the paved path leading to the lighthouse.
I have seen bicyclists along this path, but there really isn’t a safe place to lock up the bikes at the end (where the old road ends and the sand starts) if you want to explore.
This paved trail leads to a beach that looks out at the Morris Island Lighthouse, which is in the process of being renovated. Depending upon the tides, the lighthouse could look like it is completely surrounded by water, or you could see the sandbar leading up to the lighthouse.
WARNING: The currents are VERY treacherous at this location and swimming is forbidden. At certain times of the day you can actually see the tides running in opposite directions at the same time. Additionally, if the water is clear and calm, you can see how drastically the land falls off just feet from the edge of the water.
On the positive side, this can be a great area to surf fish, collect shells, and take photos.
The beach is always changing in this location. I’m attaching two pictures taken 3 years apart (Feb. 2008 vs. Feb. 2011) of the same “structure” where you can see how sand has almost completely covered it.
I hope that future visitors love this preserve as much as I do. If you have a hankering to bring along a plastic bag to pick up some trash, that would be cool, too. There are recycling containers and trash cans at the parking area, but no other facilities. The path is open from 6am to 8pm only.
This could be a park and grab if you are not interested in exploring the area.
