The CITO
If you haven't been out to visit
Colt Creek
State Park in awhile or if you have been wanting to visit, this
is a perfect opportunity. The park has been going through some
upgrades and has three new pavilions that are almost completed.
They are hoping to have the official ribbon cutting when finished.
To help them get ready for the ribbon cutting, the park manager
would like a group of volunteers to clean up around Mac Lake. I
thought this would be a great CITO event to be part of my Project
365, and to be an event for
Central Florida Area Geocachers and any others in the area who
want to join in.
The current plan is for everyone to
start gathering around 9:00 am at the posted coordinates. (allow
enough time to go through the self service pay station at the
entrance-$3 per vehicle) Make sure you eat a hearty breakfast
before arriving. We plan on having trash bags to give out for the
trash pickup and head out 9:30ish with groups going different
directions. If you have a kayak or canoe let me know. We will only
need to have a few to go out to clean around the edge of the lake.
After finishing the lake we will head back to the pavilion for
lunch. We provide the hotdogs and grill them, but need everyone to
bring their favorite picnic foods/treats to share. Please post in
your "will attend" log what you are bringing. I will be placing
some more caches out in the park before the event so keep your eyes
out for them. The afternoon will be yours to cache in the park as
long as you want or until the sun goes down. Hopefully you see some
cool wildlife while visiting the area. BTW - Did I mention this is
Jarrod88's 30th birthday???
Info about Project
365
Project 365 is a year long
project during 2011 to create 365 new caches in the Central Florida
area. My goal during 2010 was to find at least one cache every day
to complete my 365 grid. Since I completed that with the help of a
lot of local cachers I wanted to return the favor and place some
new caches in my normal caching area.
Since I started caching, not
a day goes by when I don't pass an area and think "That's a good
spot for a cache." Now let's see if I can remember them
all!
There will be a variety of
caches ranging from park and grabs to difficult. Some will be power
runs, some may make you take a long hike or bike ride, while others
may require a boat or kayak. Let's see how many you can find over
the next year.
Info about Colt
Creek
Purchased from the Overstreet
Family in May of 2006, this 5067 acre park nestled within the Green
Swamp Wilderness Area and named after one of the tributaries that
flows through the property was opened to the public on January 20,
2007. For over 60 years this property was managed as a cattle ranch
by the Overstreet family. Past activities on the land also included
lime rock mining, timber harvesting, citrus production and
turpentining. Comprised mainly of Pine Flatwoods, Cypress Domes and
open pasture land, this piece of still pristine wilderness is home
to many animal species including the American Bald Eagle,
Sherman’s Fox Squirrel, Gopher Tortoise, White-Tail Deer,
Wild Turkey and Bobcat. The park is currently equipped with a lime
rock entrance road, grass parking area, wheel chair accessible
restroom, informational kiosk, picnic pavilion and several picnic
tables and grills. Visitors are invited to fish, picnic, and hike
or ride their horses on over 12 miles of trails and enjoy nature
study at its finest.
Day Use Entrance Fee: $3.00
per vehicle/up to 8 people and $2.00 per person for individuals who
walk or bike in. Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until
sundown 365 days a year.
