Pitmedden Gardens was first laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton 1st Baronet of Pitmedden. The original plans for the formal gardens are thought to have perished in the house fire in 1840. The house was rebuilt in the 1860s and the gardens are thought to be designed on that of the palace at Holyrood House in Edinburgh. The National Trust Scotland took over in the 1950s.
The walled garden features over 4 miles of box hedging arranged in 6 parterres and has 40,000 plants. Although the formal walled gardens are open on a seasonal basis from May to October the 1.25 miles of wooded walks round the estate are open all year round.
There are a few walks around here. After bagging the cache you can carry on by following the yellow arrows. This will take you in a circular route back round to the front of the big house and the carpark. It won't take you long. There are also longer walks available if you feel energetic these are all along off road paths and trails. You can walk to the village or Udny Green. You can also walk up by the Lime kiln and along Fisher Walk. At the end of this go right along an unclassified road which leads to the Drovers trail going to Tarves. Needles to say that there are a few caches to bag along the way including 'Stinky Dog's' excellent Harry Potter themed caches.
