St Michael & All Angels is a 13th century village church set
near the river and old mill. The village itself was mentioned in
the Domesday book (1086) in which the mill was valued at ten
shillings and provided 875 eels a year to the Lord of the Manor but
there is no mention of a church then. The church has had some
alterations since it was first built with the bell tower being
added in the 14th century. There are several notable people buried
in the graveyard including Lord Keane and a general. Inside the
church you will find an RAF flag hanging in the north transept in
recognition of the villages long ties with the RAF radar station
based up the road. You will also find a model boat made by the
Vietnamese boat people who stayed at the camp in the 1970’s
and given to the village people as a thank you for their
hospitality and generosity. If the church is open I would
thoroughly recommend a look inside. Just inside, to the right of
the main door you will find the model along with post cards and an
excellent pocket book on the history of the church.
To find the cache you will need to go to the co-ordinates and
find the grave of GW was born AB November CDEF and died GH November
JKLM.
The cache is at
N50 46.(D-E)(A+F+G)B
W 001 47.MK(H-B-F)
There is limited parking near the church and the cache.
Unfortunately there is a step and a steep slope up to the church so
this is not a wheelchair friendly cache. The cache is next to a
busy road so please keep an eye on any little ones you have with
you.
If anybody would like to expand this series
please do. We would just ask that you contact sadexploration first
so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names and to avoid
duplication.
