Geocache Description:

DO NOT CLIMB DOWN THE BANK AND I WOULD APPRECIATE IF YOU WOULD COVER IT UP AGAIN. It keeps being stolen We have spent considerable time planting in this area. See below for easy access. Access is from Tynemouth station via the waggonway. There is a little clip on the gate to open it. You can also be accessed via Northumberland Park. .

The cache is now in a film canister. I have changed its position to see if it lasts longer than the others. This particular cache could be accessed by prams, bikes and wheelchairs although help would be needed to reach the final cache hide .Northumberland Park has come a long way since this cache was first placed. It has just had a lottery grant and there is a great deal of work being done over the next two years. The archeology dig last summer unearthed some fantastic finds and another dig is planned for 2013/14. A cafe, training rooms and Toilet are also going to be built along with a band stand. There is lots going on in the Park and children can feed the ducks and play in the enclosed swing park. The Whitley waggonway was built in 1811 to carry coal from Cullercoats Main Colliery to the Low Lights Staiths on the Tyne. The waggonway ran from the Fish Quay along the present east boundary of the park, across what is now Tynemouth Golf Course and on to Whitley Bay. In 1860 a railway line was opened utilizing the course of the waggonway, with Spital Dene Bridge carrying the line over Cut Throat Lane and terminating at a station alongside the Master Mariners building. Steam trains still used the line to deliver coal to a depot on the site of the old Tynemouth Station until the early 1960s after which the depot was demolished and Hazeldene Court was built on the site.
