I had collected some weird travel bugs recently. Namely some handcuffs and car keys, which reminded me about a few years back and gave me an idea on a cache as part of a series.. 1 hot summers day a few years back we had an arsonist light 5 fires across the region, including one about where this cache is next to the quarry.
A car was driving down the road heading towards Steeles Creek, when a White Ute came out of the Quarry at high speed and took off down the road.
The driver in the second car oblivious to what was occurring kept driving. The White Ute sped down the road. The local fire tower called the fire in on the already long list of emergencies and fire trucks already coming into the area diverted to head to this fire.
As the first truck headed into this road at the bottom. A white ute travelling at high speed past them. The fire fighters trained to take down the number plates of vehicles could only get part of the number plate, but did get a description of the driver.
Up the hill the fire begins to threaten houses. The other 4 had been brought under control. This fire eventually did not cause too much difficulty and was controlled. The second driver has seen the smoke and tried to return home. Stopped at the road block, he told the police what he had seen. The descriptions matched. The case was opened. Unfortunately every couple of cars turns out to be a white ute in this area.
These events occurred 2 years before Black Saturday. The area that was burnt in 2007 was burnt more severely and had complete crown destruction in Black Saturday. This is compared to the immediate surrounding area. Many questions arise about the effectiveness of hazard reduction burns in some forest types.
