The Ribbon Gang Part 2
The Ribbon Gang moved out of Fitzgerald Valley and robbed properties at Dunn’s Plain near Rockley. Entwhistle was bitter about losing his ticket of leave and on September 23rd the gang arrived at 'Bartletts' near Wimbledon, the station of the Magistrate Thomas Evernden. They tried to get Everden’s servants to join them, but were defied by John Greenwood, the overseer. Entwhistle and two of his gang shot and killed the overseer.
The police pursued the gang and after three gun battles at different locations, finally cornered them near Abercrombie Caves where the bushrangers surrendered. Ten were tried in Bathurst and hanged at a site in William Street at the corner of Ribbon Gang Lane. The bodies were buried at the intersection of George and Lambert Streets. This was the first cemetery on the Bathurst side of the river. In the 1830s there was a new cemetery at the lower end of Lambert Street but there is nothing to show whether the human remains were left undisturbed or removed to the new site.
The cache is placed near the location of ‘Bartletts’, the property of Thomas Everden.
