Geocache Description:

The Storey Gang Part 1

On August 20, 1825 eight men raided ‘Saltram’, the property of Thomas Icely. They stole food, guns and ammunition. They were pursued, but escaped. Later it was discovered that this robbery was part of an elaborate escape plan. Men assigned to GerogeRanken of Kelloshiel had joined forces with the bushrangers Storey and Shaw and had been stockpiling tools, seeds and weapons. They planned to kill George Ranken, burn down his house then travel to Wellington down the Macquarie River to the home of the Judge Advocate, John Wylde. There they planned to steal cattle and recruit more members and travel to the sea. They planned to live on the crops and cattle until they could find a boat and get out of the country.

Kelloshiel, Saltram and the neighbouring Allowaybank owned by Piper, were some of the first land grants along the Macquarie River. George Ranken bought Saltram from Thomas Icely and joined it to Kelloshiel. Later, the land was subdivided to form Eglinton. If you are interested, you will find Kelloshiel in Mill Lane just a little way along the Freemantle Road and Saltram is at the end of Cox’s Lane.

The cache is placed near the property of Saltram.
