Woodland Wonder (Hawkes Bay) Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

TheCoddiwompler: Hi angelndemon

This geocache was brought to my attention as being in need of an owner maintenance visit and after my previous reviewer note, there has been no owner response. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either replace it or archive it, after picking up any geo-litter. See the maintenance section of the Geocache Listing Requirements/Guidelines.

I've added this cache to my watchlist, and I will check back in four weeks to be sure that the maintenance has been done. In the meantime, I have temporarily disabled this listing. When the maintenance is completed, the owner can enable the listing by clicking on the link below the cache name to return it to active status.

Whatever your intentions, please post a note here on the cache page (not email) to let us know that you are still active and maintaining the cache. If a month passes without seeing a response, then I'll assume that this listing should be archived.

Please note, that if a cache is archived due to lack of owner maintenance, the cache is unable to be unarchived.

Regards
TheCoddiwompler

Geocache Description:

Cache is within 10 metre radius of co-ordinates (due to the nature of the canopy)... have fun.

Keirunga Gardens are open to the public with cottages and beautiful gardens to stroll through as well as a valley of Oak trees. A great place to put together a picnic with family and friends. Visit this park when the trains are running, take a stroll, enjoy our local woodland wonder.

Keirunga (‘The Place on The Hill’) was built in 1906 by Mr Robert Holt for the sum of $1,000. The first occupants, Mr and Mrs Reginald Gardiner named the house “Stadacona”. All the timber, heart kauri and totara, and other building materials were dragged up a track, now Joll Road, by bullock dray.

Mr Charles Ord Tanner purchased the property in 1919 and he renamed it “Keirunga”. Mr George Nelson bought Keirunga in 1928 and lived there until his death, at the age of 93, in 1964. Mr Nelson was a man of immense achievement and far sightedness. He supervised the development of “Keirunga’s” 17 hectares of parkland and gardens. With the assistance of up to five gardeners, Mr Nelson carried out drainage work, path formations and rock work. He planted a huge variety of plants and shrubs, many of which he propagated himself.
Mr Nelson generously gifted “Keirunga” to the Havelock North Borough Council. For two years “Keirunga” was unused, but an enthusiastic group, led by Frank Bacon, approached the Council in 1966 with the suggestion that “Keirunga” be developed as a cultural centre.

Keirunga Park Railway
The railway is open to the public on the first and third Sunday of each month (weather permitting) and rides are available between the hours of 11.00 am and 4.00 pm.
The Keirunga Park Railway is an 846 metre track. The track winds its way around Keirunga Park in Havelock North, in the sunny Hawke’s Bay of New Zealand, through tunnels, over viaducts and around scenic rock faces.
