The Elk – King of the Forest
The elk, Alces alces, a symbol of the majesty and dignity of SWEDEN’s natural areas. There are 350,000 elks. An elk eats 10 -12kg of food a day/15-30kg during the summer. As herbivores, half of the elk’s diet is pine, and during the winter an elk can consume 5,000 pine trees! Mating occurs September. In May/June 1-2 calves are born, each weighing 10-15kg. By November the calf weighs 130-150kg. A bull weighs up to 800kg, and a cow ca. 450kg. Only bulls have antlers. Elks can live to be 25 years old in the wild. Despite their size, elks are wonderfully graceful animals. Elks are also accomplished swimmers.
