Munkholmbroen.

Trafikministeren klippede silkesnoren over.

Description in english

The Munkholm Bridge.

Until the inauguration of the Munkholm Bridge it was not many people who paid this area a visit. From Holbaek people followed the road from Labæk and continued in a south-easterly direction along Dragerupvej until they came to a cross road. It connected Dragerup in the North with Bredetved and Eriksholm in the south. From the manor Eriksholm there was a little road going east out over an isthmus which almost separated Isefjorden from the inner part of Isefjorden – Tempelkrogen - and along this isthmus people reached out to Munkholm.

At the end of the road was a little bridge of wood (a tiny ferry berth), and there stood a gallow with a hanging iron rail. Travelers who wanted to cross the narrow strait between Munkholm and Langtved, knocked on the rail and could then observe a man come out of the inn - Langtved Færgekro 1) -on the other side of the strait, make the rowing ferry ready and row the ferry inclined up against the flow across the strait.

It was a beautiful place with the inlets expanses of water and its forest fringed shores, cattle which was grazing on fragrant meadows - beautiful and lonely. The place enjoyed the name "The Loveliness" (a Beautifull Spot on Earth), and one who had aptitude for it, could in this landscape feel as to the Stone Age. There was an idealized rural idyll for those few nature enthusiasts who had found their way to this remote corner of Zealand's midst.

In 1925 initiated the enterprising county road inspector Soeren Ellert a project for a fixed link between Munkholm and Langtved. He thought of a dam with sluice connection between Tempelkrogen and Isefjorden. Realization of this project would cost 235,000 DKK.

It took more than 25 years before a connection was established. Lack of capital and resources was the main cause, but disagreement and uncertainty about the project's final form did draw out the preparation time. The Land Administration Commission ruled in February 1928 an order which went against the sluice project, but recommended instead one by Holbaek City Council proposed alternative: A dam with a 25 m long bridge. Dam plans were rejected in the Ministry of Agriculture, and a new project by the firm Christiani & Nielsen were carried out - a reinforced concrete bridge to approximately 300,000 DKK. It was more than Holbaek City Council could afford, and the plans were preliminary suspended.

In 1937 unemployment rates in Denmark were high. This year the Ministry of Social Affairs agrees that construction plans are recognized as a job creation programme by grants from the Treasury. The total cost was calculated to 382,000 DKK, of which amounted to the estimated wages 193,000 DKK.

Throughout the second World War work on the project Munkholm link went on as a job creation programme. Besides Holbaek City Council and Holbaek County the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Public Works contributed economically. Appropriations were gradually increased. Ministry of Social Affairs had in 1947 raised its contribution up to 1,104,720 DKK, and the Ministry of Public Works its contribution to 299,200 DKK. Holbaek City Councils funding in 1944 reached up to 332,000 DKK.

In 1944 Holbaek County agreed to that Professor Anker Engelund was invited to prepare detailed design for a bridge. The project was apparently heading towards its end. There were now 3 proposals: A beam bridge made of wood, a curved bridge made of iron and a reinforced contrete bridge with 3 openings. The latter was adopted in 1947.

Material shortage slowed the progress of work now, but at the end of 1951 one was able to see the end of the project, and the bridge was inaugurated on June 4, 1952.

Chief Administrative Officer of Holbaek County H. de Jonquiéres came at the inauguration in his oration into the debate on the now completed bridge with the words "sad for the few, good for the many." The few were the ones that had enjoyed "The Loveliness” pristine lovely place, and the many the crowd of tourists and other folks who would now share if not its virginity, so the landscapes beauty. Minister of Social Affairs Poul Sørensen and Minister of Transport Joergen Joergensen was also present. The Minister of Transport trimmed the silk ribbon. "It was supposed that the silk ribbon should be picked up by a man from the county road operator," wrote county newspaper, "but eager hands armed with nail scissors and pocket knives were handed out, and the poor cord was cut into fragments to disappear in as many anonymous pockets. So the crowd of people fluctuated further on from the Langtved side over the bridge, while the minister stuck the scissor in his pocket." With some overwhelmingness one counted 70 vehicles in the motorcade, which with the Minister of Transport and Minister of Social Affairs in the lead in stunning black Cadillac’s headed for Holbaek, where lunch was waiting at the beach side restaurant Strandparken. A long cherished dream had come true when Holbaek got its bridge to Hornsherred and its third gateway.

1) Langtved Færgekro burned down October 28, 2009. The scene of fire is now cleaned up. The inn was from approximately 1780.

Besides have a look at picture a2-a5 which is taken before the bridge was erected.

It is said that one of the ferrymen was one of the geochache owners' ancestors, and lived in the house up the hill on the Munkholm side. We do not know for sure, but think the story is funny.
