Ruta de las Cascadas: Kisy the Geocaching Dog Traditional Cache

Kisy was our beloved 17-year-old geocaching dog, she passed away on Feb 4, 2013, and we placed this cache in one of our favorite waterfalls in her honor years before she died. She was not only a nice pet, but a special "friend" that deserves to be kept in our memories forever.

Since we started geocaching, Kisy has played the game with us many times. We have climbed hills, took short and long hikes, and found unique places with her. If you are a dog lover, we are sure you will like this cache and this very special place.

The Dog: Man's (and Women's) Best Friend

It is a fact that dogs are descendants of wolves. Why did the man choose them to be his first animal friend? Perhaps, in ancient times, food and shelter were the biggest problems to deal with for both humans and dogs, so they got together and made a strong relationship: While dogs found a warm place to live and be fed, humans noticed that dogs caught animals more easily due to their speed and sharper sense of smell.

Researchers estimate the history of humans and dogs coexisting as far back as 15000 years, so dogs came to depend upon man as much as man depended upon them. Dogs not only learned to hunt and guard sheep, but also to watch man's family, home, and property. So, little by little, the dog became the "man's best friend".

The famous phrase "man's best friend" was first told by a lawyer: George Graham Vest in the United States. Charles Burden was the owner of a foxhound called Old Drum, and discovered that he had been murdered by a neighbour. During the trial against the cold-blooded murderer, Vest made a famous closing argument which is transcripted below:

"Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog."

"Gentlemen of the jury: A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Vest won the case, and other related histories say that the murderer was imposed a fine of $550, four hundred dollars more than the amount that law would force him to pay.

About the cache

After leaving Baños de Agua Santa you have to take a detour to the right direction just before crossing the second tunnel. You will easily find the ground zero if you follow the needle of your GPSr. You are looking for a small waterproof vitamin bottle. Be sure to bring your own pen.

If you are staying in Baños, the best way to get here is renting a bicycle, a quadron, or a similar vehicle. Be prepared to get wet and have fun!

El Perro: El Mejor Amigo del Hombre (Y de la Mujer También)

Es un hecho que los perros descienden de los lobos. Por qué el hombre lo escogió como su primer amigo animal? Tal vez, en tiempos antiguos, la comida y el refugio fueron los problemas más grandes que tuvieron que afrontar humanos y animales, así que se juntaron y crearon una fuerte relación: Mientras los perros encontraron un lugar caliente donde vivir y ser alimentados, los humanos notaron que los perros cazaban a los animales mas fácilmente debido a su velocidad y agudo sentido del olfato.

Las investigaciones estiman que la historia entre humanos y perros se remonta a 15000 años en el pasado, así que los perros dependen del hombre tanto como el hombre de ellos. Los perros no solo aprendieron a cazar y a cuidar rebaños, sino también a cuidar la familia, casa y propiedades del hombre. De esta manera, poco a poco el perro se hizo "el mejor amigo del hombre".

La famosa frase "el mejor amigo del hombre" fue dicha por primera vez por un abogado: George Graham Vest en los Estados Unidos. Charles Burden era el propietario de un galgo llamado Old Drum, y descubrió un día que su mascota había sido asesinada por un vecino. Durante el juicio en contra del asesino a sangre fría, Vest pronunció su famoso discurso final que está transcrito abajo:

"Caballeros del jurado: El mejor amigo que un hombre pueda tener, podrá volverse en su contra y convertirse en su enemigo. Su propio hijo o hija, a quienes crió con amor y atenciones infinitas, pueden demostrarle ingratitud. Las personas están dispuestas a caer de rodillas para honrar nuestros éxitos, serán los que arrojen la primera piedra, cuando el fracaso coloque nubes sobre nuestro porvenir. El único, absoluto y mejor amigo que tiene el hombre en este mundo egoísta, el único que no lo va a traicionar o negar, es su perro."

"Caballeros del jurado: el perro de un hombre está a su lado en la prosperidad y en la pobreza, en la salud y en la enfermedad. Dormirá en el frío piso donde sopla el viento y cae la nieve, sólo para estar junto a su amo. Besará la mano que no tenga comida para ofrecerle, lamerá las heridas y amarguras que produce el enfrentamiento con el áspero mundo. Guardará el sueño de su pobre señor como si fuera un príncipe. Cuando todos los demás nos abandonan, él permanece. Cuando la riqueza desaparece y la reputación se hace añicos, él es tan constante en su amor como el sol en su viaje por el cielo. Si la desgracia deja a su amo sin hogar y amigos, el confiado perro sólo pide el privilegio de acompañar a su amo para defenderle del peligro y pelear contra sus enemigos. Y cuando llega el último acto, y la muerte hace su aparición y el cuerpo es enterrado en la fría tierra, no importa que todos los amigos hayan partido. Allí junto a la tumba, se quedará el noble animal, su cabeza entre sus patas, los ojos tristes pero abiertos y alertas, fiel y sincero, más allá de la muerte".

Vest ganó el caso y otras historias sobre el juicio dicen que al asesino se le impuso una multa de $550, cuatrocientos dólares más de lo que normalmante debería haber pagado.

Acerca del caché

Saliendo de Baños de Agua Santa se tiene que tomar un desvío hacia l derecha justo antes de cruzar el segundo túnel. Se encontrará fácilmente el ground zero si se mira al receptor GPS. Deberá buscar un tubo pequeño hermético de vitaminas. Asegúrese de llevar su propio esferográfico.

Si se está alojando en Baños, la mejor manera de llegar es rentando una bicicleta, un cuadrón o similar. Esté preparado para mojarse y divertirse a la vez!
